Russ Meyer's BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS introduced by JOHN WATERS
Written by Roger Ebert, this is a film of firsts. First 60's rock musical. An all girl rock group when there weren't any. An insane gay subtext. It is Hollywood in the 60's!
Watch John Waters introduction here:
It doesn’t get cooler than this. Straight America had no idea what to make of this film, but today BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS captures Hollywood in the 60’s.

What stands out is the music. The Strawberry Alarm Clock had a psychedelic hit with INCENSE AND PEPPERMINT, but the music of the all girl group THE CARRIE NATIONS makes you wonder. Would THE RUNAWAYS or even THE GO GO’S have existed without them? Take a look at this amazing 10 minute documentary about the music!

To read an interview I did with Russ Meyer, introduced by Roger Ebert including Russ trying to work with THE SEX PISTOLS:

Behind the paywall: Mondo Topless is a 1966 pseudo-documentary directed by Russ Meyer, featuring Babette Bardot and Lorna Maitland among others. It was Meyer's first color film following a string of black and white "roughie nudies", including Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! While a straightforward sexploitation film, the film owes some debt to the French New Wave and cinéma vérité traditions, and is known to some under the titles Mondo Girls and Mondo Top.
Its tagline: "Two Much For One Man...Russ Meyer's Busty Buxotic Beauties ... Titilating ... Torrid ... Untopable ... Too Much For One Man!"
The film was banned in Finland.

The Chicago Psychotronic Film Society which begat The Global Psychotronic Film Society is quite a party. From it's earliest days with guests JOHN CLEESE, ROBERT DeNIRO, BILL MURRAY (our first dues paid member), DAN AYKROYD, SYDNEY POLLACK, RUSS MEYER, CLIVE BARKER, JOHN DUGAN, PENN AND TELLER, KENNETH ANGER, DARIO ARGENTO and many more there was nothing like it on earth. People travelled from all over the world to attend our parties or host them and none of the celebrities were paid to be at the events.
We did shows at bars and clubs LIMELIGHT, KABOOM, THE LYRIC OPERA (!), THE BIOGRAPH THEATER, THE LIAR'S CLUB and many more places. This meant you had to be 21 to attend and there were no dealer tables.
We were the only fandom that had an equal number of women in the group at a time when women avoided fandom! Join us on Facebook here: The party starts now
The Global Psychotronic Film Society based on Substack will soon be posting our podcast - become a paid member and help us make that a reality!
